Kendrick Lamar shares tracklist for 'To Pimp a Butterfly'

Publish date: 2024-07-21

Every day brings more information about Kendrick Lamar’s next album – the highly-anticipated follow-up to good kid, M.A.A.D. city – due out out March 23. Just a few days after Lamar shared the album’s artwork and the official title, To Pimp a Butterfly, Universal Music Group sent out the official tracklist to multiple music upload services.

1. Wesley’s Theory

2. For Free? (Interlude)

3. King Kunta

4. Institutionalized

5. These Walls

6. U

7. Alright

8. For Sale? (Interlude)

9. Momma

10. Hood Politics

11. How Much A Dollar Cost

12. Complexion

13. The Blacker The Berry

14. You Ain’t Gotta Lie (Momma Said)

15. I

16. Mortal Man

Supposedly this will help curb potential piracy – if these sites know the track names they’ll be better-prepared to pre-empt any uploads of that name – but in the short term, we’ll just speculate about each song’s meaning. It’s now clear that Lamar’s happy-go-lucky Grammy-winning single “I” is in fact on the album, but so is the much darker “The Blacker the Berry.”

One other lingering mystery involves the still-unnamed track Lamar played on the final episode of The Colbert Report back in December. Which one is it? Good guess is track 14, “You Ain’t Gotta Lie (Momma Said),” based on lyrics and listed run time. The final song, listed as over 12 minutes long on iTunes, is officially titled “Mortal Man,” so yes, it probably will be another lengthy meditation on mortality along the lines of 12-minute “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” from good kid, M.A.A.D. city.
